You may be able to stop your contributions
There are only limited circumstances where you can completely stop contributing to KiwiSaver, but you could consider taking a break with a contributions holiday.
Employees
In most cases you can't stop making payments to KiwiSaver.
When you first join KiwiSaver, you have the option of opting out within the first 8 weeks (some people may be eligible for a late opt-out). Once the opt-out period has passed you could consider taking a contributions holiday.
Once you're a member, you may be able to stop your contributions altogether if you:
If your KiwiSaver scheme requires you to make minimum contributions to remain a member, you'll need to contact your KiwiSaver provider.
Non-employees
If you're not employed, you may not be required to make payments to your KiwiSaver scheme unless you want to. This will depend on the terms and conditions of your scheme. Please contact your KiwiSaver provider.
Effect on your member tax credit entitlement
If you stop making contributions, you may not receive the full member tax credit entitlement.
