Is your money safe with Inland Revenue?
Yes, your money is safe. We have many systems and checks in place to ensure that we:
- hold your money for the correct amount of time before we pass it on to your chosen scheme, and
- send the correct amount of money your chosen scheme, along with interest of 5.36% (after tax). Your scheme provider will credit the total payment into your KiwiSaver account.
Why is your refund taking so long?
| If your employer ... | then your refund will be made ... |

hasn't passed your contributions on to us |
directly by your employer. If your employer is unable to refund your contributions, then call us on 0800 549 472 (0800 KIWISAVER). |

has passed your contributions on to us |
automatically by us, once we've processed the contributions. Note:The refund of your contributions could take some time after they've been deducted from your pay. This is because even if you're paid weekly or fortnightly, employers only file their payroll information with us once or twice a month (depending on the size of their business), after they've deducted tax and KiwiSaver contributions from your pay. We then need time to process the information. |
What if you need a refund urgently?
If you need an urgent refund, call us on 0800 549 472 (0800 KIWISAVER). We'll require evidence that the contributions have been deducted and that your employer hasn't refunded them to you directly. For example, we might:
- ask you to send us a copy of your payslip
- contact your employer.
We may also ask you for additional evidence to support your request for an urgent refund.
Why have you only got part of your refund?
We always issue refunds as quickly as we can. However you may initially receive only a part of your refund if:
- your employer hasn't sent us the details of all your contributions they've deducted (via their payroll information), or
- we've received all the details from your employer but haven't processed them all yet.
You will receive the rest of your refund as soon as we've processed all of your employer's payroll information.
